March 2010
Kids 'n' Youth
by Sue Mangold
February was a fast month. The first week some of our youth joined the choir and sang a lovely rendition of "This Little Light of Mine." After hearing the book Rainbow Fish, about the joy of giving of oneself, they also learned about the importance of the fish symbol in Jesus' time.
The kids enjoyed a valentine party with crafts and cupcake decorating and we talked about who our Valentine angels were in our lives.
The third Sunday we talked about the Season of Lent. We found out that the 40 days of Lent correspond to the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness having his faith tested. We made spyglasses to remind us that with faith we can “see” what can be possible … and help to make it so.
At the end of the month the children stayed in service to enjoy the interfaith worship. They also gathered Change-for-Change, the proceeds going to Fishline's Food for Thought weekend nutrition program. Thanks for your generosity.
The youth group had a fun evening at church on the 13th. We gathered in the afternoon and decorated all those Valentine's cookies you purchased the next day. Then we had dinner, watched a movie and played “Spoons”.
We haven't finalized our activity for March, but will be sending out an e-mail, etc., when it's decided.
This month Change for Change will be collected to make home start-up kits for women and children moving into their own places after a stay in a domestic shelter. They usually have to leave their homes suddenly, with only what they can carry, to escape violence. To make a new life they have to start from scratch. This means they need everything: bedding, kitchenware, paper-goods, etc. A list of needed items will be posted on our bulletin board. Monetary donations will be collected on the last Sunday as well. We hope to provide at least two complete kits to the Alive Shelter.
Thanks for all you do!
